Jorge Borrego
Texas State House of Representatives, District 118 (TX HD-118)
Jorge Borrego is the Republican candidate for Texas State House District 118, in San Antonio. Borrego’s priorities include prohibiting trans girls from competing in girls sports. He is endorsed by Texas Governor Greg Abbott and American Federation for Children, an education advocacy group focused on promoting school choice. Prior to running for office, Borrego worked as a policy analyst and K-12 education policy director for the Texas Public Policy Foundation, a conservative think tank whose priorities include expanding the power of Texas law enforcement in immigration, supporting the growth of charter schools, and expanding parental rights in education. In that position, he played a significant role in passing school choice, the Teacher’s bill of rights, and the Parent’s bill of rights. Under the parental bill of rights, school clubs related to sexual orientation and gender identity are banned and parents can report school employees they believe are violating the DEI ban.
Borrego recently came under scrutiny for resurfaced tweets in which he used homophobic and racist slurs, made lewd comments about women, and discussed personal use of cocaine. His initial response dismissed concerns about the post, although he has since apologized.
